Jesus, The Holy One of God

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

Bible Reading: John 6:60-71

In John 6, Jesus made it clear to the crowd that followed Him that to have eternal life required believing that Jesus was God. Anyone who chose to follow Him had to believe

that Jesus was the Messiah, the one sent by God to save people from their sin.

Because of Jesus’ statements, many of the people who had followed Jesus solely out of curiosity, to see a miracle, or to get a free meal abandoned Him.

Jesus then turned to the remaining twelve disciples and asked, “You do not want to leave too, do you (John 6:67)?”

Peter, speaking for the twelve disciples, said that they would continue to follow Jesus because they knew that no one else could give them eternal life. In John 6:69 Peter said, “We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” Peter and the other disciples recognized that Jesus was holy Messiah sent by God. They were determined to stay true to Jesus. Unlike the rest of the crowd who had only followed Jesus to be entertained or for other selfish reasons, the twelve disciples followed Jesus because they knew that only Jesus could forgive their sins and give them eternal life in heaven.

Why are you following Jesus?

In the words of Jesus, “You do not want to leave too, do you?”

“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth…And this is what he promised us – even eternal life.” 1 John 2:20, 25

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I believe that You are the Holy One of God and that I need You to forgive my sins. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
