Cup of Thanks

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

(We are taking a break from our Wednesday at the Well Bible studies because I know time is often limited during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Wednesday at the Well will resume after Christmas. - Gayle)

Bible Reading: Psalm 116:13

Psalm 116:13 says, “I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.”

The “cup of salvation” in today’s verse refers to the drink offerings in the Old

Testament law that were given by the people as a way of saying, “Thank you,” to God.

Jesus came to earth and lived the limiting, struggling life of a human man. He then willingly allowed Himself to be arrested, beaten, ridiculed, and ultimately nailed to a rough wooden cross where He died. He allowed those things to happen to Him although He had committed no crime or sin. He allowed those things to happen to Him so that neither you nor I would have to suffer eternal punishment for the crimes or sins that we’ve committed. He was punished in our place, yours and mine.

Jesus then defeated death by rising from the dead and returning to heaven, alive and well, so that death couldn’t keep us away from God. Jesus did all of that because he loves us.

Because Jesus did all of those things for us, we need to accept the salvation that He offers us and raise our “cup” in thanks.

Have you accepted Jesus’ offered salvation?

If not, please, do so.

If so, what can you do today to say, “Thank You,” to God?

“Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:20

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus’ willingness to suffer and die in my place. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
