"THE" Path of Life

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

Bible Reading: Psalm 16:11

Today’s Bible verse, Psalm 16:11 says, “You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”

Notice the word “The” that comes before the word “Path” in today’s verse.

God didn’t have the writer say that there is “a path of life.” “A” is a word that points out an indefinite thing. “A” can refer to any one of a number of similar items. Inserting “a” before the word “path” in today’s verse would give the meaning that any path might lead to eternal life. That isn’t the meaning that God intended.

God chose to have the author of this verse use the word “the” when describing the “path,” “The” is used in a sentence to indicate a definite, specific thing. Since the word “the” is used in today’s verse, we can conclude that God meant to say that there is only one path that leads to eternal life – one definite, specific path. That path is through Jesus. (The word "the" is used in the same way in the John 14:6 below.)

There are other paths, of course, but none of them lead to eternal life. All other paths lead ultimately to eternal death and separation from God.

Which path are you on?

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6

Prayer: Heavenly Father, forgive me and put me on the path to eternal life because of my faith in Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
