Wednesday at the Well: Psalm 47:1 - You CAN & SHOULD Memorize the Bible

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

Bible Verse to Explore – Psalm 47:1

Psalm 47:1 reads, “Clap your hands all you nations shout unto God with cries of joy.”

Below are the words to a simple worship song:

“Clap your hands all you people

Shout unto God with a voice of triumph.

Clap your hands all you people

Shout unto God with a praise!”

What do you notice about the Bible verse and the musical chorus quoted above? They sound an awful lot alike, don’t they?

Many of the praise choruses we sing are taken from Psalms or other books in the Bible. By learning these choruses, we are actually memorizing Bible verses! (And you didn’t think you could memorize scripture, did you?)

How many of the choruses that you know have their roots in the Bible? Try to find out. Look up the phrases or key words of the chorus in a Bible concordance then read the full verse in your Bible. You’ll be amazed at how much scripture you’ve memorized without even trying!

As you explore Psalm 47:1 using the Inductive Study Guide (click the logo to download it), keep the words of another psalm, Psalm 119:11 in mind: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." If we want to be living for God and living God’s way, it’s vital that we memorize as much of the Bible as we can. Psalm 119:11 is clear, memorizing God’s word is how we avoid sin.

Let’s pray that you can get started on your study.

Heavenly Father, help us to hide Your word in our heart. Then trust You to call it to mind when we need it. In Jesus' name. Amen.
