Bible Verses to Explore: Colossians 3:1-17

We all have habits.

Before Jesus came into our lives, many of those habits were bad. Colossians 3:8 and 9 tell us we are to, “now put these things out of your life: anger, losing your temper, doing

or saying things to hurt others, and saying shameful things. Don't lie to each other. You have taken off those old clothes—the person you once were and the bad things you did then.”

Why is it important to put bad habits out of our lives? Anything we do regularly controls our lives. Our habits are our masters. They control us.

We should not be controlled by things that make God unhappy. Instead, we should develop good habits. We should regularly do things that reflect our new life in Christ Jesus. Verse 12-16 in our Bible reading explains how we should live now. These verses tell

us we should show mercy to others, be kind, humble, gentle, and patient, don't be angry, forgive each other, love each other, let Christ’s peace control our thinking, let Christ’s teaching live inside us, teach and counsel each other, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with thanksgiving.

What are you in the habit of doing every day? I hope your habits make God happy. Remember, “Everything you say and everything you do should be done for Jesus your Lord. And in all you do, give thanks to God the Father through Jesus” (Colossians 3:17)

Let’s pray. God, show me which bad habits I need to replace with powerful, godly habits. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
