What Is a "Savior"?

Updated: Mar 26, 2020

Bible Reading: Isaiah 43:11

Isaiah 43:11 says, “I, even I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior.” That verse, written hundreds of years before Jesus came to earth as a human baby, was Jesus,

God Himself, talking. Jesus was saying that He is our Savior.

What is a “savior”? Why do we need one?

A savior is “a deliverer, a preserver.” A savior rescues someone from danger. A savior acts to preserve the life of another person. A savior is a person who is willing to die, if necessary, to ensure that someone else will be allowed to keep living.

Jesus did just that. He died so that we could live on forever in heaven. Jesus didn’t have to die, He chose to die in our place. Because we have disobeyed God by not perfectly loving God and other people, we have been condemned to die and spend eternity separated from God. Jesus loves us so much, that He was willing to die in our place. He was willing to become our Savior and rescue us from eternal death. Jesus did what was necessary to rescue or save us. That is what a Savior is.

“And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.” 1 John 4:14

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I know that I’ve done wrong. I need Jesus to be my Savior. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
