Wednesday at the Well: Psalm 141:3 -Words Can Be Like Wildfires

Updated: Mar 27, 2020

Bible Reading: Psalm 141:3

Have you ever watched an out of control field fire or forest fire? It doesn’t pick and choose which house to annihilate or which trees or crops to destroy. It claims everything

in its path.

Getting a wildfire under control is a huge undertaking. Firefighters often fight blazing fires for days or weeks. Often they have to set a second fire or backburn to create a burned-out gap between the fire and undamaged territory. That often gets the fire under control, but it doesn’t undo the damage that was done.

Angry, mean, and hurtful words damage families and friendships as surely as a wildfire destroys a field or forest. Today's Bible verse advises us to pray saying, "Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips”

When you realize you’ve set a wildfire of angry words, you can take action to create a “backburn” to stop the burn of the angry fire. However, you can’t undo the damage.

At whom have you aimed fiery blasts of angry words?

What are you going to do about it?

Let's be sure not to behave like the man in Proverbs 29:11, "A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control."

Let's pause and pray. Then you can click the Inductive Bible Study logo, download the study guide, and spend some more time with God learning how He would and wouldn't have you speak. Heavenly Father, set a guard over my mouth. Keep watch over the door of my lips. In Jesus' name. Amen.
