Bible Reading: Psalm 119:55-60
Have you ever heard about a person who spends three hours a day praying or reads five chapters of the Bible everyday? Maybe you’ve heard about people who give huge
amounts of money to missions or spend 30 or 40 hours a week doing volunteer work.
Do you feel like you’ve somehow failed God because you can’t do those things?
Have you considered the possibility that maybe you can’t do those things because God doesn’t want you to do them?
How can you know what God does want you to do?
The Bible makes it clear the God does want us to pray, read the Bible, and give our time and money to serve God by serving others. However, the Bible doesn’t tell us how much time we should spend doing these things.
To make a personal decision as to how much time to spend with God we need to:
1. Ask God what he wants of us.
2. Listen to his answer.
3. Obey and follow through.
While that sounds good, what can we do – practically – to make that happen?
1. Start small. Read a couple of verses each day, say a 1-2 sentence prayer, and give our time in small portions.
2. Listen and look. If we pay attention, God will let us know what he wants. He may give you a strong desire to read a chapter of the Bible each morning or he may give you a passion to pray specifically for or give to a certain missionary for instance.
3. The key to getting from doing nothing to having a customized relationship with God, is not to do a lot, it is to obeyt. When you start small and then begin to feel those urges telling you to move in a certain direction, obey them. That voice urging you read your Bible more, pray more or reach out more often to others is God speaking to you. He’s working to customize his time with you.
Keep in mind the promise found in Psalm 119:68, “You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees.” God is good. He will teach if, if you are willing to allow Him to do that.
Let’s pray. Heavenly Father, help each us customize our time with You so we can get to know You and Your ways better. In Jesus' name. Amen.
