Bible Reading: Proverbs 11:21

Some of the punishments that God gave to people in the Old Testament seem horrible (See Genesis 6, Genesis 19, and Exodus 7-12 for some examples). God didn’t give

these punishments quickly or without thought. God had waited patiently for these people to come to Him and say that they were sorry for the evil things that they had done. God gave them years of opportunity to seek forgiveness and change their ways, but they stubbornly refused. They chose to keep living in the wickedness that separated them from God. They brought the punishments that they received onto themselves.

Proverbs 11:21 says, “Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will go free.” This verse points out that God will punish all evil, all wrongdoing, all sin.

Happily, we don’t have to suffer punishments brought on because we’ve done bad things. We can go to God, tell Him that we’re sorry for what we’ve done, and ask for his forgiveness. He’ll then give us His Holy Spirit to help us start living in ways that please Him rather than anger Him. We can do that because Jesus already took our punishment for us. He endured God’s anger in our place.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I’ve know that I have done things that have angered you. Forgive me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
