True Peace

Updated: Mar 27, 2020

Bible Reading: John 14:27

Events such as being abandoned by your family, falsely accused of a crime, or having your home destroyed by a natural disaster usually bring out strong, negative emotions.

Some people become depressed. Others become angry or bitter. Still others blame other people or God for the bad things that happen.

As a Christian, we should have a very different response to painful events that pass through our lives.

In John 14:27 Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” The “true peace” that Jesus gives to those who welcome Him into their lives should be the foundation of a Christian’s response to all events – joyful events and painful events.

This “true peace” isn’t sitting by a rippling brook on a sunny day without a care in the world.

Instead, true peace, the kind of peace that Joseph and Job experienced, the kind of peace that only Jesus gives, shows itself during hard times. True peace is the assurance that the storm will pass and that we won’t struggle alone because God is with us.

Does that mean that when we experience painful circumstances we shouldn’t cry, grieve, or feel pain?

No. Jesus did all those things while He was here on earth.

It does mean that when we face hard situations we can trust God. We can sincerely believe that He is in control. We can rest in the assurance that “…the peace of God, which transcends all understanding…” (Philippians 4:7) will calm and comfort us until the storm passes.

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.” 2 Thessalonians 3:16

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want to experience Your peace. Help me to let go and trust that You are in control of all that happens in my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
