Red Sails

Updated: Mar 27, 2020

Bible Reading: Matthew 16:2-3

“Red sails at night,

Sailor’s delight.

Red sails in the morning,

Sailor’s take warning.”

There is some truth to that old saying. Jesus referred to it when He was addressing

the Pharisees and Sadducees’ request for a sign from heaven saying in Matthew 16:2 & 3, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.” Jesus told them that they had a better understanding of the weather than they had of signs that God’s plan was being fulfilled.

There is nothing wrong with being knowledgeable about the weather, sports, books, or other things, however, if your knowledge stops there, or is greater on some subject than it is on the Bible, your knowledge is incomplete. If the greatest part of your time and energy is going into learning about something other than God, your education needs rounding out.

How are you investing your time? What do you spend most of your time learning? Do you know more about the weather or computer games or TV shows or some other topic than you know about God’s Word and His plan for your life?

“…guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” Psalm 25:5

Prayer: Heavenly Father, guide me and teach me. You are my Savior and my God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
