Wednesday at the Well: 1 Samuel 16:1-13 - Beautiful Inside

Updated: Mar 27, 2020

Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 16:1-13

Have you ever picked up a big, red apple, rubbed it until it shined, bit into it and discovered the inside was mushy and rotten? That apple was beautiful on the outside but

rotten and ugly on the inside. People can be like that apple. They can look beautiful on the outside, but not be beautiful on the inside.

The prophet Samuel learned that in today’s Bible reading. Samuel thought that Eliab would be God’s choice for king because he looked handsome and strong on the outside. God told Samuel in verse 7, “Eliab is tall and handsome, but don't judge by things like that. God doesn't look at what people see. People judge by what is on the outside, but the Lord looks at the heart.” God didn’t choose Eliab. God chose David. Why? Because David was “a man who wants to obey” God (1 Samuel 13:14). God looks at what a person is like inside – in his heart.

What do people see when they look at you? Do they see only a handsome or pretty outside? Or do they see a kind, generous, helpful, patient beautiful person on the inside?

I hope you are like David and like a truly beautiful, fresh apple – beautiful inside and outside.

Let's pray. Heavenly Father, make me beautiful inside. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
