Bible Reading: Acts 9:31

Can a person feel safe and comfortable and feel fearful at the same time?

That is exactly the kind of situation the people of the early church in today’s verse

were in. Acts 9:31 says, “Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.” These early Christians were devoted to serving God, so much so that they were afraid of making him unhappy. They were afraid that they would somehow do something that he wouldn’t want them to do or that they would neglect to do something that he did want them to do. They weren’t afraid of what he would do to them; rather they were afraid of disappointing him, of making him sad.

Since they were afraid to make God unhappy, the Holy Spirit comforted them and gave them a feeling of safety encouraging them with the assurance that God loved them and would always be there to take care of them.

Are you trying to do everything that you know God wants you to do and avoid those things that you know he disapproves of? Are you afraid of making God unhappy?

Be assured that when you live in that kind of fear of God, the Holy Spirit will comfort you with the knowledge that God loves you and will always be there to bless you and to take care of you.

“Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways.” Psalm 128:1

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I’m so glad to know that You will always be there for me. I don’t ever want to make You unhappy. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
