What's in a Name?

Updated: Mar 27, 2020

Bible Reading: Proverbs 22:1

A reputation is the worth that one person has in another person’s eyes. It is a reflection of how other people see a person. A good reputation comes from using words

and actions that other people find admirable in the presence of other people.

Proverbs 22:1 says, “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” A “good name” is a much more than simply a good reputation. It is a person’s character. It is a reflection of what that person is like when no one is looking.

A person with a “good name” or strong character is a person who uses admirable words and acts in admirable ways even when no one is around to see them. He loves, obeys, serves, and listens to God in public and in private. He stands by what he believes and knows to be right, just, true, pure, and good when he is with other people and when he is alone. His decisions show that he honors God, is attentive to Jesus, and led by the Holy Spirit in church and in his own room. He is devoted to and bold in sharing the gospel when there are other people around to see him and when no one is there to see. He is consistent and unwavering in his faith in and service to God on Sunday morning and on every other day of the week. He does those things eagerly, sincerely, and without a need for human approval or reward – the approval and reward he seeks comes only from God.

Is your name growing in worth daily?

“A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth.” Ecclesiastes 7:1

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to grow to be a person of good character. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
