Bible Reading: Matthew 5:3-10
Before the days of automatic milking machines, cows were milked by hands, often by young maids – young girls. The sight of maids milking cows would have been a familiar
sight. Therefore, they were a perfect addition to the song, The Twelve Days of Christmas.
The line “eight maids a-milking” represents the eight Beatitudes. These eight beatitudes are found in today’s Bible reading, Matthew 5:3-10. These Beatitudes include eight attitudes and behaviors that God wants His children’s lives to exhibit.
Each of these attitudes and behaviors comes with its own special blessing. For example, anyone who is pure in heart will see God (verse 8) and verse 10 promises a blessing for anyone who suffers because he believes in Jesus saying, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
I encourage you to read all of the Beatitudes. Ask God to help you obey Him by living these attitudes and behaviors daily.
“But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.” Jeremiah 17:7
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to live the Beatitudes daily. I want to honor You in all I do and say and think. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
