Bible Reading: Matthew 22:15
The Pharisees had their work cut out for them. They had watched Jesus carefully to try to catch him doing something wrong. They wanted to be able to collect evidence that
Jesus was breaking God’s law in some way.
When all their efforts to find any such evidence failed, Matthew 22:15 says, “…the Pharisees went out and laid plans to trap him in his words.”
Since they couldn’t catch Jesus doing anything wrong, they decided to try to catch him saying something wrong, perhaps misquoting the law, saying one thing then doing something different, or deliberately teaching something that the law didn’t say. They were never able to “trap him”. Jesus’ words were always accurate, always consistent, always true.
Do you choose your words as carefully as Jesus chose his? Is what you say accurate, consistent, and true?
“And I tell you this, you must give an account on judgment day for every idle word you speak. The words you say will either acquit you or condemn you.” Matthew 12:36 & 37 (NLT)
Prayer: Heavenly Father, point out any inaccuracies, inconsistencies, or untruths in my words so that I can correct them. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
