The Edge

Updated: Mar 27, 2020

Bible Reading: Genesis 6:5-7

There has been a lot of talk about “the edge”. A certain pizza place advertises pushing the toppings on their pizza to the edge. A news program has a feature that offers

to give us “the legal edge”.

Pushing things to the edge or going to the edge means taking things to the limits of what is acceptable.

While we can safely add extra toppings to a pizza to “go to the edge and back,” pushing God to the edge can be dangerous. Genesis 6:5-7 say, “The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the LORD said, ‘I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth…’” Noah’s neighbors learned that the hard way. They had pushed God so hard for so long that they didn’t just push him to the edge, they pushed him over the edge. God sent a flood to, “wipe mankind…from the face of the earth.”

If we aren’t careful, we could push God over the edge, too. Thankfully, God is extremely patient. He loves us so much that he is willing to wait for a very long time hoping that we will stop pushing him to the edge and start pulling him toward us.

Are you pushing God to the edge or pulling him toward you?

“God ‘will give to each person according to what he has done.’ To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.” Romans 2:6-8

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I’m tired from all that pushing to the edge. Hold me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
