Names of God: Bridegroom/Groom

In today’s “Names of God” post I will discuss Jesus as our Groom or Bridegroom.

Proverbs 5:18 & 18 says, “May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife

of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer – may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.” For a husband to be satisfied with his wife for a lifetime it a challenge. It takes work. The husband must make an effort to satisfy his wife. He must express love and tenderness toward her both physically and emotionally. His investment of time, energy, love, and affection will encourage his wife to return his affections with love and respect as well as the desire to make him happy, satisfied, and content in their marriage.

That truth works in other direction, too. Wives must make an effort to satisfy their husbands. For most men to be satisfied means that they must feel that they are respected. Men need to know that they have dignity. It is up to wives to treat their husbands in such a way as to assure their husbands that they are respected and in a way that ensures that their dignity remains intact.

Jesus, as our groom, has gone to great extremes to shower us with love and tender affection. He wants to please us and keep us happy in our relationship with Him.

It’s up to us to decide whether we are going to return His affection and make our Groom content in His relationship with us or spurn His affections and destroy our relationship with Him.

Just as a human bridegroom wants his bride all to himself, Jesus, our spiritual Bridegroom, wants each one of us as His own. He doesn’t want to share us with anyone or anything, especially people or things that could corrupt us or make us impure.

In 2 Corinthians 11:2 Paul said, “I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.” We have been promised to Jesus as His bride. Therefore, we should do everything necessary to remain pure, clean, and without blemish for Him, our Bridegroom, just as a human bride prepares to present herself, beautiful and pure, to her groom.

Let’s pray together. Heavenly Father, help us to be the pure bride that Jesus deserves. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
