The Apple of His Eye

By Gayle J. Thorn

Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 32:10

“The apple of his eye.”

Did you know that expression came from the Bible? It’s found in Deuteronomy

32:10 which says, “In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye…”

“The apple of his eye” means that God cherished, loved and protected the Israelites. They were his special children. He loved them so much that he took whatever action was necessary to keep them from harm. He provided for their every need. He promised to never let them down.

Why then did the Israelites suffer so much pain? They rejected God. They rebelled against him and refused to do what he had commanded. As a result, God said, in essence, “Fine. If you want to do things your own way, go right ahead. I’ll just stand back and let you suffer the sad consequences.”

Like the Israelites, each one of us is the apple of God’s eye. God loves each of us and he will do whatever is necessary to protect us from harm. He will see to it that each of us has everything we need to be healthy and happy. He will never let any of us down.

All God asks is that we obey his commands, not because he is a harsh taskmaster, but because he knows that only by obeying him can we be kept truly safe and happy.

[Jesus said], “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.” John 15:9 & 10

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I choose to obey you. I want to always be the apple of your eye. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
