Our God Is a Jealous God

Bible Reading: Exodus 34:14
Exodus 34:14 says, “Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God."

If it is okay for God to be jealous, why is it wrong for us to be jealous?
First, God’s jealousy is constructive. God is jealous of only one thing – our worship. His jealousy is there to protect us from the pain and heartache of giving our love and attention to someone or something that doesn’t love us or want the best for us the way God does. God created us to worship him. We belong to God and he has every right to expect our worship. He doesn’t want us to have anything or anyone in our life that is more important to us than God.
Second, the jealousy that we experience is destructive. When we are jealous, we are acting on our desire to have something that doesn’t belong to us. We see someone with a new car and we want it. We see someone with straight hair (or curly hair) and we wish our hair could be straight (or curly). Jealousy can lead us to think and act in ways that hurt other people and damage our relationships with them.
Let’s leave the jealousy to God.
“Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.” Romans 13:13
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for caring about me so much that You don’t want me to have anything in my life that is more important to me than You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
