Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 18:1, 3
David and Jonathan were loyal friends. In today’s Bible reading, we read this about their friendship: “After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit
with David, and he loved him as himself…And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.” David and Jonathan not only told each other that they would stay true and loyal friends forever, their actions bore that out.
Jonathan defended David against King Saul’s jealous rages (I Samuel 20).
David’s loyalty to Jonathan extended right on through to Jonathan’s son whom David took in and provided for (II Samuel 9).
While loyalty means standing firmly beside someone even in hard times, loyalty implies looking out for the best interests of that person. That means that if your friend is doing or even considering doing something that is dangerous or harmful, you will do what is right and necessary to protect him – even from himself.
Are you loyal to your friends?
Do you actions prove your words?
“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” Proverbs 17:17
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be a loyal friend. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
