Exercise Your Self-Control

Bible Reading: Titus 2:11-12

Do you eat more than you should? Do you loaf in bed longer than you should? Do you spend more time than you should playing computer games, on the Internet, listening

to music, playing sports, or watching TV?

Eating an extra cookie or lying in bed an extra five minutes may not seem like a big deal. However, controlling your urges in little things will help you to develop the self-control you will need to say, “No,” when your body is wanting you to do the “big things” that you know you shouldn’t do. You will be much more able to obey the command in Titus 2:11 & 12, “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age…”

Just like physical exercise will build up your body’s strength and stamina, refusing to overindulge in little indulgences will strengthen your will. The exercise of telling yourself, “No,” will help you to stand firm when you are tempted to indulge in things that you know God wants you to stay away from.

Are you exercising your self-control or could you use a good workout?

“Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.” Proverbs 25:28

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to build up and strengthen my self-control. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
