Bible Reading: Proverbs 19:20
Do you ever feel like your parents don’t really listen to you?
There are things you can do to help them be willing to truly hear you out.
First, start by following Solomon’s instruction in Proverbs 1:20 which says, “Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.” Listen to your parents. Really listen. Try to understand their point of view, it just might be helpful to you. If you genuinely care about your parents enough to show them respect by listening, they will be more likely to return the favor and really listen to you.
Second, earn their respect and trust. If they trust you and respect you they will be much more likely to listen to what you have to say. Things like following their rules, not arguing with them, being on time, and doing your chores without a reminder all help to raise the level of trust and respect your parents have for you.
Finally, know what you are talking about. Before you go to your parents with a request take the time to make sure you have all of the facts.
These three things will work. Try them out!
“My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to earn my parents’ trust and respect. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
