Bible Reading: Hebrews 9:12

For several days, we have been talking about the Christmas symbols found in the candy cane. Today we want to talk about the red stripes.

In the Old Testament law, many animal sacrifices were needed to cleanse the people from their sins. Why? Because the punishment for all sin is death. Because we sin, something had to be punished; something had to die. One animal sacrifice was not enough. Many, many animals had to be sacrificed. Animals had to be sacrificed again and again and again.

That was why God sent Jesus. Jesus, “came to offer himself only once. And that once is enough for all time” (Hebrews 9:26b). Because of Jesus shed blood, “we are made free by his blood sacrifice. We have forgiveness of sins because of God's rich grace” (Ephesians 1:7). That is what the red stripes on the candy cane mean. The red stripes in the candy cane represent Jesus’ blood.

When you eat a candy cane today, remember that Jesus gave you the most precious gift he had to offer, His own blood – His own life. Remember, also, that Jesus blood is why we can live forever in heaven with God.

“Sprinkled with the blood of Christ, our hearts have been made free from a guilty conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. So come near to God with a sincere heart, full of confidence because of our faith in Christ.” Hebrews 10:22

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for giving Jesus. Thank you that Jesus bled and died in my place. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
