Bible Reading: Mark 10:21-22
What is your most favorite possession, the thing that you value more than anything else in the world?
How would you react if you were told to sell it and give the money to the homeless? Could you live without it? Would you become angry with the person who told you to sell it? Would you look for other ways to raise money? Would you jump at the chance to use what you have to help someone else?
A couple of thousand years ago, a young man came to Jesus and asked what he needed to do to inherit eternal life. He said he had already kept the law and all the commandments.
Jesus looked at the young man and said, "One thing you lack…Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me” (Mark 10:21).
The young man was heartbroken. He didn’t want to part with his beloved possessions, even though selling them would give him the opportunity to travel with and serve Jesus himself!
Enjoying what you own isn’t wrong. Valuing those things more than you value God or others is wrong. Jesus should be your most valued possession.
Is He?
“Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6:5
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me keep my priorities straight and keep Jesus at the top of the list. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
