Bible Reading: Matthew 6:19-21
Don’t you wish that your jeans would never fade?
Don’t you wish that food would never spoil?
Wouldn’t be terrific if your car never became rusty?
Wouldn’t it be great if clothes never tore or wore out?
Wouldn’t it be nice if the pages of books never yellowed?
As wonderful as it would be if all of our stuff never wore out or got broken, we know that that isn’t reality. The reality is, everything wears out sooner or later. Nothing lasts forever.
No, that isn’t true. There is some stuff that will last forever. Stuff like what we learn from God’s Word. Stuff like dependence on Jesus. Stuff like wisdom and honor and discernment and joy. Stuff like peace and contentment – and love.
Matthew 6:19 warns us, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” Owning stuff here on earth isn’t wrong. Craving temporary stuff more than permanent stuff is the problem. We should, instead, focus on preparing for eternal life in heaven and work to store our treasures there.
What kinds of stuff are you investing in – temporary stuff or permanent stuff?
“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:20 & 21
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for wanting me to have the best stuff, eternal rewards in heaven. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
