Should I or Shouldn't I?

Bible Reading: 2 Corinthians 1:12

How do you decide whether or not something is okay to do if the Bible doesn’t specifically say it is okay to do it?

2 Corinthians 1:12 says, “Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done so not according to worldly wisdom but according to God's grace.” God has given us a conscience to guide our decisions and actions.

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, God also gives us, His Holy Spirit. His Holy Spirit will guide us and teach us, especially when we are studying and searching The Bible to learn what we should and shouldn’t do.

If, as you are searching the scripture, you can’t find anything to tell you that a certain behavior is clearly wrong, you need to look at the subject from a different direction. Try this. Search the Bible for the answer to this question instead: Does the Bible say that what I’m thinking about doing is definitely a good thing to do?

If you can’t find any evidence in the Bible that God definitely, without reservation approves of the action, don’t do it! In other words, “When in doubt, DON’T.”

If you can’t do something with a confident, clear conscience, don’t do it. Anything done with doubt is sin.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” 2 Timothy 3:16

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want to keep my conscience clear. Remind me to listen to your words of wisdom before I do anything. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
