Names of God: The Word of God

1 Kings 12:22 says, “But this word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God…”

In 1 Chronicles 17:3 we read, “…That night the word of God came to Nathan…”

Finally, Luke 3:2 says, “…The word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert.”

What do these three verses have in common?

They all speak of “the word of God” coming to someone.

The Word of God is one of the names given to Jesus in the Bible (See John 1:1 at the end of this post). When the Word of God spoke to these people, that meant that God didn’t send them a letter or an e-mail, God came personally and spoke to those people. God gave them the information that they needed to live wise and godly lives and to avoid pain and punishment.

God still comes to speak to us today. He speaks through the Bible. He speaks though the words of wise people. He speaks through the nudging of His Holy Spirit in our heart and mind.

What is God saying to you?

Are you listening to Him?

Let’s pray together.

Heavenly Father, speak to each of our hearts. We’re listening. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Related Verses:

John 1:1-5, 14 – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth”

John 5:37-40 – “And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.”

Hebrews 1:1-5 – “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father’? Or again, ‘I will be his Father, and he will be my Son’?”

1 Peter 1:23-25 – “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, ‘All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.’ And this is the word that was preached to you.”
