The Best Mission Field

Bible Reading: Mark 13:10

In Mark 13:10 Jesus said, “And the gospel must first be preached to all nations.” Who is to do that preaching? Who is to tell people about the gospel of Jesus Christ? You and I.

God has called all Christians to be missionaries, to tell people about Jesus.

Does the word “missionary” make you think of foreign countries, strange foods, and foreign languages? Do you think that to be a missionary you must have years of training and raise thousands of dollars in backing?

Before you decide that you can’t be a missionary because you don’t want to go to a foreign country, look at the “mission field” that you already live in. The best mission field may be as close as your own hometown.

Do you have any brothers or sisters who don’t know Jesus personally? How about your mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa? If all of those people already know Jesus, look around a bit more. What about your aunts and uncles and cousins? What about your next-door neighbors, the bus driver, the lady in the cafeteria, or the waitress in your favorite restaurant? Still looking? Well, there are your teachers, the custodian at school or work, your coworkers, your boss . . .this list goes on and on!

Being a missionary doesn’t have to mean leaving home. You may already be living in the best mission field for you. A mission field chosen by God especially for you: your own community.

“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” Romans 10:14

Prayer: Heavenly Father, go with me as I step into the special mission field that you have chosen for me and tell the people around me about Jesus. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
