The Substitute

Bible Reading: 2 Peter 3:9

God must punish our sin. The only punishment that is appropriate for our sin is death and separation from God forever. Because God is the perfect judge He doesn’t have a choice. He can’t

“overlook” even a tiny, little sin. To God, sin is sin is sin and every sin must be punished the same way – by death.

However, God doesn’t want to punish us. He doesn’t want us to die. He wants to give us forgiveness for our sin. In order to keep us from having to die for our sin, God came up with an alternative plan.

God sent a substitute to be punished and die in our place. That substitute is Jesus. Jesus never sinned. Jesus didn’t deserve to be punished. Jesus didn’t deserve to die. Jesus took our punishment and died our death anyway. He did that so we wouldn’t have to.

2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” God is waiting patiently for as many people as possible to recognize that they need salvation and accept Jesus.

I hope you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior. If not, God is waiting for you. Why not talk to Him today?

“The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. The LORD protects the simplehearted; when I was in great need, he saved me.” Psalm 115:5 & 6

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I believe Jesus died in my place. I’m so sorry for all of my sin. Forgive me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
