Bible Reading: Joshua 1:1-8
Today is the last day in our series on using the hand as a Bible study tool. Let’s review where we’ve been. The first finger on our hand represented hearing the word of God, the second finger
represented reading the word of God, the third finger represents studying the word of God, and the fourth finger represented memorizing God’s word.
Now, let’s finish our series.
The fifth finger represents meditating on God’s word.
Meditating on God’s word is more than simply having a Bible around or sitting in Bible study classes or worship services. To meditate on God’s word means to think seriously about what it says and what it means. To meditate on God’s word, we need to spend time with it. We need to concentrate on it, letting it soak into our minds and allowing it to saturate our lives.
Mediating on God’s word is not a new idea. It goes back to the Old Testament day. For example, in Joshua 1:8 God told Joshua,“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
This command from God wasn’t just for Joshua. The Psalms are the result of David’s meditations. There are 13 epistles (letters) in the New Testament that demonstrate that Paul meditated on the word of God. Many, many other people before us meditated on God’s word: Moses, Jacob, Peter, John, Timothy and others in the Bible. Calvin, Spurgeon, Piper, and C. S. Lewis are but a few others who immersed themselves in God’s word.
Won’t you take all we’ve learned during the past few days and saturate yourself in the word of God? Won’t you do as Paul advised Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:15 and “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
“But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 1:2
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your word. It is precious! Help me to saturate my heart and soul with its teachings. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
