The Hand (5)

Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 11:8-21

Today is the fifth day in our series on using our hand as a Bible study tool.

If you remember, the first finger on our hand represented hearing the word of God, the second

finger represented reading the word of God, and the third finger represents studying the word of God.

Now, on to the fourth finger. The fourth finger represents memorizing God’s word.

In Deuteronomy 11:18, God commanded the Israelites to “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.” Why? So they won’t “be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them.”

“I wouldn’t worship other gods,” you say? Don’t be too sure. Any person, hobby, activity, or thing that gets more of your attention that God gets has become a “god” in your life and that is sin. It is what God was warning the Israelites – and us – about in today’s Bible reading.

God’s word is the strength we need to resist the temptation to sin. Temptation can strike at any time, but most often attacks when we are tired, weak, or vulnerable. Temptation usually takes us by surprise and occurs at times when we don’t have a Bible available. That is why it is so important to have as many verses of the Bible memorized as possible. Having God’s word hidden in our hearts is our best weapon against the temptation to sin.

I hope you will begin today to get serious about memorizing God’s word.

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word...I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Psalm 119:9 & 11

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to memorize Your word so I will be able to resist the temptation to sin by making anything more important in my life than You are. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
