The Hand (2)

Yesterday, we started a series on using our hand as a Bible study tool. Here’s how it works. Each finger on our hand will represent a way to take the Bible into our lives.

The first finger on our hand will represent hearing the word of God.

Proverbs 2:2 & 5 say that by “turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding,...you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.”

Mary, the woman in today’s Bible reading, gives us an example of what “turning your ear to wisdom” means. In Luke 10:38 we read that Mary “sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he [Jesus] said.” Mary listened carefully to what Jesus taught.

We don’t have Jesus physically sitting in our homes and churches, so we need to listen to Jesus by listening to older, wiser Christians teaching and preaching God’s word.

When we listen to God’s word, we begin to learn about the tools, principles, guidelines, and truths we need to become wiser and to make our faith stronger. We learn how God wants us to live our lives. We learn about the blessings God offers. We learn about God’s plan for our lives here on earth and eternally in heaven.

There are many opportunities to hear God’s word taught or preached available to us. Worship services, Sunday School classes, and Bible study groups are the most common. We can also meet with a friend or mentor one-on-one. We need to take advantage of these opportunities.

I hope you will take advantage of the opportunities your church offers and listen carefully to the teaching and preaching, so you can hear every word God says.

“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.” Romans 10:17

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to faithfully and regularly listen to and hear Your word as it is taught in my church. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
