Picking at People

Bible Reading: Romans 14:12-17

Do you often find yourself watching other people and looking for things that they do wrong or things that you find irritating or silly?

It’s easy to criticize other people. We often pick at someone for doing the very same things that we ourselves do. That might be because we feel guilty about doing things that we know we shouldn’t do. Then, rather than disciplining ourselves and changing our behavior, we try to make that person look guilty so we will feel less guilty.

We might also find fault with a person who is doing things that we know we should be doing. Since we feel guilty about neglecting to do those things, we try to make the person who is doing them look bad to ease our own consciences.

The next time we are tempted to start picking at someone, we would be wise to remember the words of Romans 14:12 which says, “So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.” God will hold us accountable for every word we speak, including words of criticism.

Evaluate your life and words. Ask God to help you to avoid picking at people and to focus on living the life God wants you to live.

“Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way.” Romans 14:13

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be obedient to You. Help me to leave other people and their behavior to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
