New - Old Songs

Bible Reading: Psalm 33:3

Psalm 33:3 says, “Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.” This verse doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t keep singing old songs, too.

The old songs or hymns teach us about God and God’s plan for Jesus to die to pay the penalty for our sin. They help us to worship and celebrate Who God is and rejoice of all God does.

Here is a challenge for you:

This Sunday, go to church fifteen minutes earlier than usual. Sit in the pew and open a hymnal. Chose a hymn and read it through. Really pay attention to what the words say. (I know that many people claim to only listen to the music of a song and that the words aren’t important. The words in a hymn are important.) As you are reading, ask yourself, “What does this song say about Jesus?” “What is in this song that I can use to make my life with Jesus better?”

After really reading a few hymns through, you may begin to think of those moldy, oldies as fresh and new!

“Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:19 & 20

Prayer: Heavenly Father, keep my faith fresh. Don’t ever let it grow old and moldy. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
