Bible Reading: Luke 2:8-16
Today we will continue talking about Christmas sacrifices. Let’s talk about the sacrifices of the shepherds.
Luke 2:8 says that on the night of Jesus’ birth, “some shepherds were out in the fields near Bethlehem watching their sheep.” These shepherds had responsibilities. They had flocks of sheep that needed their care and protection. Night time is a dangerous time for sheep. Sheep needed to be protected from thieves and wild animals. Leaving their sheep unguarded meant the sheep could be stolen or killed.
When an angel appeared to the shepherds and told them about Jesus’ birth, the shepherds didn’t hesitate. They quickly chose to sacrifice the safety of their sheep. They chose to risk losing their income or job. The shepherds also sacrificed their time and a night’s sleep to go to Bethlehem.
Why? To go see Jesus. The shepherds believed that seeing Jesus was sacrificing their flocks. It was worth losing their income or jobs.
What is Jesus worth to you?
“Our Lord and God! You are worthy to receive glory and honor and power. You made all things. Everything existed and was made because you wanted it.” Revelation 4:11
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be willing to sacrifice the things that are important to me for Jesus. He is worth it! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
