Why Pray? (7)

Bible Reading: John 14:9-15

Reason #6: Prayer allows us to reach out to God for our earthly and eternal needs and desires.

People are fragile. We have many needs – physical, emotional, spiritual. We can do some things ourselves much as a child pulls on his socks, but God wants us to rely on Him, much as a child relies on his father to tie his shoes.

Sometimes God allows us to do things for ourselves, as a father allows his child to try tying his own shoes. The child’s father being ready to help should He be asked.

In John 14:13 and 14 Jesus said, “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” God is eager to step in and “tie our shoes.” We should never hesitate to take even the smallest need to our Father.

At other times, God expects us to walk hand-in-hand with Him, much as a father holds his child’s hand as they cross the street. He wants us to allow Him to do what He knows to be best for us, even if we think we can handle things on our own.

When God wants us to walk hand-in-hand with Him, we shouldn’t chafe under His control, like a child trying to pull his hand free from his father’s hand, thinking he can cross the street himself. We should allow God to remain firmly in control so He can meet our needs as He sees best, and not try to “pull our hand free.”

Oftentimes, God wants the privilege of providing for us Himself. He will do more and give us more than we could ever do or provide for ourselves. It is important that we allow God to exercise that privilege of meeting our physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, in His own way and in His own time, in the way He knows is best. We need to let go of the desire to “do it myself.”

I hope you will tell God of your needs and trust Him to provide.

“Therefore I [Jesus] tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank Your for taking care of my every need. Help me to trust You to always do what is best for me. In Jesus' name. Amen.
