Why Pray? (5)

Bible Reading: Psalm 25:1-9

Reason #4: Prayer helps Christians grow spiritually.

Think of prayer as the stem of a flower. The stem of a flower connects the flower and leaves to the roots. Without roots, the flower and leaves die. The stem is vital to the life of a flower. Without a stem, the flower is disconnected from the roots, the source of the flower’s nutrition and life.

We are the flower and leaves. God is the Root. Without the stem – prayer – we are disconnected from the Root and will shrivel and die spiritually.

In order to stay healthy and grow spiritually, we need stay consistently connected to God through prayer, asking Him to nourish us, to give us knowledge and wisdom, and to help us grow to be like Jesus.

In Psalm 25, we read one of David’s prayers in which David earnestly asks God to help him learn and grow spiritually, saying in verses 4 and 5, “Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”

I hope you will follow David’s example and earnestly ask God to teach you and help you to grow to be the person He wants you to be.

“I recounted my ways and you answered me; teach me your decrees. Let me understand the teaching of your precepts; then I will meditate on your wonders.” Psalm 119:26

Prayer: Heavenly Father, teach me Your ways. Help me to grow to become the person You want me to be. In Jesus' name. Amen.
