Benefits of Scripture Memorization

In Deuteronomy 11:18 God said, “Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.” In this verse, God is telling His people to

memorize His word. This command isn’t an isolated command. The command to memorize Bible verses is repeated throughout the Bible. There are also verses that encourage scripture memorization and still other passages that show examples of people, including Jesus, who had memorized scripture verses.

2,000 years later Jesus said in, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:4). Jesus’ words make it clear that memorizing scripture wasn’t just an Old Testament command.

So, God wants us to memorize Bible verses. Why? Why is this so important?

Memorizing God’s Word –

* Helps us know God, believe in God, & believe God.

* Allows us to glorify and honor God.

* Helps us find satisfaction in God.

* Allows us to experience God's peace.

* Allows us to enjoy God's presence.

* Helps us to experience freedom from sin.

I encourage you to obey God’s command and begin hiding God’s word in your heart today!

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16 (Emphasis added.)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your word. Help me to commit it to memory. In Jesus' name. Amen.
