Poetry & Prose: I'm in the Lord's Army!

Gayle J. Thorn

What’s your text tone?

Mine’s a song I learned in Sunday School as a child. It’s called, “I’m in the Lord’s Army!”

Here are the words to this song:

“I may never march in the infantry

Ride in the cavalry

Shoot the artillery

I may never fly o'er the enemy

But I'm in the Lord's army!

Yes Sir!

I'm in the Lord's army!

Yes sir!

I'm in the Lord's army!

Yes sir!

I may never march in the infantry

Ride in the cavalry

Shoot the artillery

I may never fly o'er the enemy

But I'm in the Lord's army!

Yes sir!”

I’m not sure that many churches would have the courage to teach this song to children today.

Why?

It’s far from politically correct. In encourages us to take up arms and fight.

I, however, thing this song has a powerful and valuable message.

While there are many things that God may not call us to do, there is one thing that He expects every Christian to do: Fight evil and it’s temptations by using “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17).

I’m proud to say that I’m in the Lord’s army…are you?

P.S. – I love this quote by Connie R. Boggs of Handfuls of Purpose, a ministry of Living Waters, in Pine Mountain, Kentucky: “Soldiers aren’t allowed to be tired. Soldiers keep on going when their strength is gone. Soldiers don’t complain. Soldiers look out for others. Soldiers don’t have a platform from which to brag to others about how wonderful they are. Soldiers are quick to see a need and take action. What a lesson for us all!...Let us continue to serve and be ready to go with HIM whenever our Leader calls.”
