Make Jesus Real

Bible Reading: Luke 24:36-49

We all have five senses: taste, touch, smell, sight, and hearing. These five senses allow us to experience the world around us. They bring joy and enrichment to our lives.

When Jesus lived on earth as a human man, he relied on these human senses to help people learn about God and His kingdom. Here are a few examples:

* Jesus touched people who needed healing (Matthew 8:15).

* Jesus cooked delicious smelling food for His disciples (John 21:9).

* Jesus appealed to their sense of taste when he multiplied the five loaves and two fish and fed 5,000 men.

* Crowds of people took in the sight of Jesus performing miracle after miracle.

* Jesus spoke God’s message aloud in the hearing of those who were willing to listen.

All five senses are involved in today’s Bible reading, too. In this passage, Jesus appeared to His disciples shortly after His resurrection. The disciples became afraid. Verse 37 says, “They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.”

Therefore, Jesus did a series of things to prove to the disciples that He really was alive. In verse 37, Jesus spoke (hearing) to His disciples. In verse 39, He asked them to touch His hands and feet. In verse 40, He showed them (sight) the nail marks in His hands and feet. In verse 42, taste and smell were involved as He ate a piece of broiled fish.

All five senses are used in today’s memory verses, too. Read the verses and see if you can find them. Then praise God for your five senses and for Jesus’ wisdom in using them to teach us about God and His kingdom.

“Jesus said, ‘Have the people sit down.’ There was plenty of grass in that place, and the men sat down, about five thousand of them. Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.” John 6:10 & 11

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for my five senses. Thank You that they help me learn about You and Your ways. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
