Controversy

Bible Reading: Acts 19:8 & 9

The word controversy means public dispute or debate. Many people see controversy as negative. They believe it is destructive and demoralizing. The believe it drives a wedge between people.

However, not all controversy is bad. Controversy, when accompanied by right motives, love, open thought, and discussion is stimulating, exciting, challenging, informative, and leads to better understanding.

Acts 19:8 & 9 say, “Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.” In other words, Paul’s message created controversy.

Even Jesus’ words and teachings created controversy. Even Jesus’ own family found Jesus’ message to be controversial as Mark 6:3 tells us. This verse says, “‘Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?’ And they took offense at him.”

The message taught by Jesus and Paul was hard for people to accept. People debated, disputed, and disagreed with both Paul and Jesus.

What this controversial message?

Paul & Jesus both taught that Jesus is the Messiah and that we need to “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38).

Don’t be afraid of controversy. Be brave and share the message of Paul and Jesus with people you know. It will change their lives!

“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” 1 Peter 3:15 & 16

Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me courage to share Jesus’ message with my friends and family. Help me to not fear controversy. In Jesus' name. Amen.
