Bible Reading: 2 Peter 3:8-16
Someday, Jesus will come back. That is a promise made by God to us. Verse 10 of today’s Bible reading says that Jesus will come, “…like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.” We don’t know when Jesus will come. He could come at any moment, so we need to be ready. We need to be continually doing and saying things that will make Him happy when He suddenly returns.
While we are here on earth, we are preparing for eternal life in heaven. It is true that none of us are perfect and holy. However, when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, His perfection and holiness become ours. Jesus gives us His Holy Spirit to live in us and to help us make choices that will allow us to please God with our words and actions. We throughout our Christian lives we continually try, with the help of the Holy Spirit to please God through our words and actions. Sometimes we succeed. Sometimes we fail.
In essence, we are learning. As we copy or imitate the words and actions of Jesus, we are gradually becoming more like Him. We are preparing to live in heaven where there will be no sin, no temptation, and we won’t have to “try” to please God because we will be able to please Him perfectly.
I hope you are busy preparing for Jesus’ return.
“And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.” 1 John 2:28
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to faithful imitate Jesus’ example and be ready for His return. In Jesus' name. Amen.
