Bible Reading: Luke 21:36
Today’s Bible verse says, “Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.” The point that Jesus was making with these words is that prayer and the other spiritual disciplines – church attendance, regular Bible reading, etc. – shouldn’t be occasional pursuits. They should be a way of life.
Making the things of God a way of life means doing these things as if they were no different than eating or breathing. It means doing these spiritual disciplines as if they were the most important things in your life (which they should be).
Think about it. What do we do with the important things? We schedule them. We make appointments so we can be sure those things get done. We work other less important things around the priorities.
That is what we need to do with church attendance, Bible reading, and prayer. Church is easiest since worship and Bible study classes are held at specific times. We simply need to be sure we keep those appointments.
As for personal Bible reading and prayer we need to pick a time each day and set it aside – make an appointment with God – then keep it.
When we make those appointments with God and keep them, the spiritual disciplines will truly become a way of life.
“I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.” Psalm 119:14-16
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be prompt and consistent in my appointments with You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
