Glow-in-the-Dark Stars

Bible Reading: Matthew 5:14-16

Many children love the glow-in-the-dark stars that can be stuck to the ceiling and walls in their bedrooms. During the day, these stars absorb sunlight. At night, the stored energy causes the stars to glow. The room takes on a nighttime sky appearance.

If these stars are kept in a dark drawer or closet, they can’t shine. There is no light for them to absorb. In order to light up the room, they must spend hours exposed to the sun.

Verse 14 of today’s Bible reading says, “You are the light of the world.” Verse 16 adds, “...let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Like those glow-in-the-dark stars, we are to light the dark places around us. We are to make visible the love of God and the way to God.

However, we can’t do that if we keep our hearts and our faith hidden from the Light that we need to absorb. We need to be regularly exposed to God and His word. We must pray, read the Bible, attend worship services and Bible study classes. We must soak in God’s message and ways so that we will be able to shine brightly in the sin-darkened world around us.

Are you regularly absorbing the Light?

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

John 8:12

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to absorb Your Light so I will be able to shine so brightly in the darkness around me that people will clearly see the way to Jesus. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
