Bible Reading: Ephesians 5:1-32
Ephesians 5:8 begins by saying, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” This verse doesn't say when we become Christians we are in the light, it says we are light. Think about it! God is light. God is in us. Thus, we are light! Cool!
The last sentence of Ephesians 5:8 says, “Live as children of light.” Since we become light by accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are to live a life that proves our new status as children of light. How do we do that?
Most of the remaining verses in Ephesians give some of the specifics on how to live as light. These verses can be summarized in two brief sentences:
1. Stop old, hurtful habits.
2. Start new, helpful habits.
What are some of the old, hurtful habits we should remove from our lives of light? Ephesians 5 lists a few of them: Anger. Bitterness. Lying. Stealing. Laziness. Unwholesome or negative speech.
What are some of the new, helpful habits we should make a part of our lives of light? Ephesians 5 lists some of those, too: Love. Encouragement. Kindness. Compassion. Forgiveness.
Have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior? If so, you are a child of light. I encourage your to take your new life seriously. Stop your old, hurtful habits. Start some new, helpful habits. Make one of these new habits reading your Bible every day. As you read the Bible, God will help you to learn about other new, helpful habits that every child of light should make a part of his or her new life of light.
“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.” 2 Corinthians 4:6
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for making me to be a child of light through Jesus Christ. Help me to life as the child of light that I am. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
