Know the Truth

Bible Reading: John 17:17

People say many things about what the Bible teaches. Not all of these things are true.

For example, some people use the expression "God helps those who help themselves," saying is not found in the Bible. It's not! In fact, the Bible teaches exactly the opposite. Proverbs 3:5 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." That means we shouldn't rely on our own strength or wisdom. We need to depend first on God. In other words, God helps those who rely on Him for help.

Another example of something people claim is in the Bible is, "Money is the root of all evil." That isn't what the Bible teaches either. What the Bibles says is, "the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." In other words, the Bible teaches that having money isn't wrong, but giving money more importance that people or God is wrong.

These examples show us that it is important to always compare what we hear with the Bible. We need to be sure that we know the truth.

Start a new habit today. Pay attention to what you hear. Double check what you are told with the Bible. Be sure that you really know the truth!

"For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does."

Psalm 33:4

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to remember to double-check what I hear by comparing it to Your word to be sure that I know the truth. In Jesus' name. Amen.
