Bible Reading: Matthew 12:33-37
We have all said things that have hurt someone. Sometimes deliberately. Sometimes accidentally. Such hurtful words are wrong. They should never be spoken, especially by Christians.
Deliberately insulting another person is easily avoided if we simply think before we speak and choose only to say things that are loving, kind, encouraging, and considerate.
Sometimes, though, we use “innocent” insults. “Innocent” insults occur when we say something that seems harmless but touches a nerve in another person. For example, I am a small person. I like being small. I’m okay with being called a Hobbit or being teased because I can’t reach the top shelf. However, if I tease someone else who is short not knowing that that person is sensitive or uncomfortable about his or her height, I could hurt that person’s feelings. I have innocently insulted that person.
In Matthew 12:36 Jesus says, “But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.” We need to consider every word we say. If we insult someone, deliberately or innocently, we will be held accountable for that injury.
Ask God to help you avoid all hurtful words, including innocent insults.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to use only words that demonstrate Your love. In Jesus' name. Amen."
